One third of 2017 has already passed, and during the past few months several new whiskies have been introduced. We’ll highlight some of the most interesting new releases.
New Highland Park designs & whiskies
Highland Park has redesigned the look and feel of their core line. The standard range also has new names, to emphasise the viking history of the Orkney distillery. Highland Park 10 Year Old Viking Scars and Highland Park 12 Year Old Viking Honour will both reach stores soon, and Highland Park 18 Year Old Viking Pride will follow later this year.
In addition to these new bottles, the first expression in a new special Viking Legend series is released. Highland Park Valkyrie is bottled at 45,9%, and will be followed by Valknut and Valhalla in 2018 and 2019.
And like that’s not enough, Highland Park is also releasing a commemorative bottle for RebusFest, at the end of June 2017. The 10 year old Highland Park Rebus30 (40% vol) will be available to members of Highland Park’s Inner Circle tribe for around €30.
Bowmore introduces Travel Retail Exclusives
Bowmore has launched three new global travel retail exclusive expressions. Bowmore 10 Year Old Dark & Intense is finished in hogsheads and ex-sherry casks, and bottled at 40%. Bowmore 15 Year Old Golden & Elegant (43% ABV) was matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, and Bowmore 18 Year Old Deep & Complex (43%) has been matured in both Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.
Apart from these new travel retail bottlings, Bowmore No.1 is added to Bowmore’s range to replace Bowmore Small Batch Reserve. Bowmore No.1 is a bourbon cask finished no-age-statement single malt.
Johnnie Walker Blender’s Batch No.2 (and No.6!)
Blender’s Batch No.1 (Red Rye) and No.3 (Triple Grain) had already been released, and now edition No.2 has been introduced officially as well. Johnnie Walker Blender’s Batch Bourbon Cask & Rye Finish does not have an age statement and is bottled at 40%.
Additionally, the label of Johnnie Walker Blender’s Batch No.6 has been published at TTBOnline.gov. It’s not official yet, but batch No.6 will most likely be named Wine Cask Blend. Just like Batch No.2, it will be a NAS blend at 40%.
Kelpie is this years bottling for Ardbeg’s annual Ardbeg Day. The Committee Release version (57.1% vol) is already available to their ‘committee members’ at ardbeg.com, and the regular version (46% vol) will be launched on Ardbeg Day: June 3rd. Both whiskies are matured in bourbon casks and Russian Black Sea oak casks.
In addition to the two Kelpie versions, Ardbeg is expected to launch Ardbeg An Oa soon, too. This heavily peated single malt is bottled at 46.6%, and is finished in American Oak, ex-Bourbon and ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.
Tomatin Five Virtues Series
2017 will be a busy year at Tomatin. After releasing a few single cask bottlings, the Highland distillery is introducing a new limited edition series: Five Virtues. It consists of Fire, Water, Earth, Wood and Metal – all will have different flavors that match the characteristics of the name.
New whiskies overview in the app soon
We’re working on a feature that displays the most recent whiskies in the Whisky Suggest App, to inform you about all the new Scotches, bourbons and other whiskies. It’s almost ready, and will probably be available in one of the next few updates of our app.
