General description

Glad I finally tried a Deanston - especially as it’s owned by South African company Distell.

Put it off due to being fixated on the 12yo which is strangely not available in South Africa.

Reviewed 27/06/2022

Nose

Lemongrass. Nutmeg. Orange. Orange zest. Spicy. Bright. Fresh

Palate

Naartjie (clementine) spicy. Not as sharp from the new oak as I thought it would be. Well balanced. Juicy and sparkly like a bourbon… but not ott sweet like lots of bourbons are.

Finish

Arrival is bright and powerful, but very very quickly falls away (lack of body) and while the finish is nice and lingering I would love to try the 12yo for that extra depth and body.

General description

As my collection grows, the wishlist, looks for a reason to purchase a particular drop. Here, "Brand New", (virgin) Oak, from Kentucky.
I look at a lot of mine, because of the "predecessor" cask!
Nice presentation & natural sherry brown, tawny colour!
It has a warming nose, inviting, then a mildly bitter timbery palate with a good, unexpected winey finish.
A better nose (35) than palate (21), a pleasing, but a little flat in the finish (20)!

Nose

Interesting - a dry boxwood style honey, sweet, warming & a clear fresh wood, a hint of Vanilla!

Palate

Bitter / Salty & woody is up front. Hay or grass like. Not unpleasant, a dry very quick sweetness, the 46.3% is there:

Finish

Unusual, I got a dry sherry, yeasty & again the expected woodiness is there all the way. Medium at best, but OK!

Nose

Honig, Vanille, Viel Eiche (riecht wie ein halber Bourbon), wenig Frucht (leider), dezenter Pfirsich

Palate

Honig, deutliche Eichenwürze, Pfeffer, leichter Pfirsich

Finish

Gar nicht so kurz.
Es bleibt die Eiche. Zuviel junge Eiche für mich.
Leicht bitter

a top NAS budget friendly whisky, that keeps on developping in your glass for quite a long time. rich and versatile, this is great bang for your buck!

Nose

Taste

the nose continues and after 20 or so minutes it develops further with some butterscotch, vanilla and honey with a soft woody note. Another 10 minutes in and a wee bit of peat joins in.

Finish

long, dry. after 20 minutes it softens out and some oil and nuts linger on.

Sweet honey and vanilla, some grain notes. At the price it is being sold, un-chill filtered and at a decent ABV, this one is a mainstay in my bar. Can't really go wrong with Deanston.

Very interesting. Bold and young with a zesty nose and sweet fresh taste. Despite you can feel the alcohol a bit too much, the taste reveals lots of barley sugar and vanilla. Surprisingly long finish for a young NAS malt.
