General description

Knob Creek Rye is simply a nice whiskey. I'll admit, it is the first rye to pass my lips and I'm happy to say, I'll make a place for it on my shelf. While I cannot pickup or discern particular fruits or confections, there is a nice sweetness about this pour which balances the subtle woody elements.

ENJOYMENT METHOD:
I drank this spirit neat, from a Glencairn glass.

The rating below is similar to what I gave in my reviews of 1792 Twelve Year Old, 1792 Bottled-in-Bond, Elijah Craig Small Batch, J Henry 5 Yr Straight Bourbon, Maker's Mark PS - ID Dir Cut 3, Oak and Eden Bourbon and Vine, Rebel Yell 10 Yr Single Barrel, Weller C.Y.P.B., and Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select.

Nose

Knob Creek Rye offers a dry warming nip, and a touch of burn with with deep nosing. I also sense some light floral notes in a touch of sherry backed by a truckload of dry grain. In each waft there are faint notes of fresh tart apples, marachino cherries and plump, red raisins. Rye is front and center and presents as both a spice and yeasty bread. The nose is not sweet yet I do sense an underlying confection hiding in dry seasoned sawdust, hazy barrel spice and the char of toasted wood. This is a gentle and simple whiskey with nice notes of worn old leather.

Palate

The first sip of Knob Creek Rye is easy to hold and I find it dry and warm. As on the nose, I get light floral notes in sherry and herbal dusty grain. While for me (and a bit difficult to discern) the only fruit element I taste is the skin of pealed pears. But spices of cinnamon, warm ginger, pepper and rye assert themselves. Yet the only sweet I can pick up is of simple syrup which is just enough to balance the hint of hazelnuts. And like on the nose, dry sawdust, hazy toasted wood and old leather are in each mouthful.

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Knob Creek Rye is well blended and is an easy sipper. While not particularly full, this spirit is smooth and oily with a pleasent coppery feel when held. In the Glencairn, fast falling narrow channels return the liquid to the chestnut colored pool, leaving an irregularly formed inverted crown.

Finish

Knob Creek Rye has a short gentle and dry warm finish. The herbal grain fades in and out as do the spices of pepper and rye. And like I sensed on the nose and palate, dry sawdust, toasted wood and old leather fade away after each sip. When the last dram is drained, the empty Glencairn smells of sweet light oak. This is an inviting rye.

Vanilla./ sweet up front, warm and peppery eye finish. This is a delicious 100 proof whiskey. Not something I'd sip on, but amazing in manhattan.

The nose has a semi-sweet overtone (dried fruits - dates come to mind). A nice middle of the road mouthfeel, along with a pleasant Rye spice in the finish. Overall, a fairly good rye, one just about everyone can enjoy.

General description

very unassuming and pleasant rye. subtle flavors and nose, bordering on boring. nothing to hate about this whisky, buy not much to like. if you're looking for an unassuming rye to add a little spice to add to a cocktail, this might not be a bad choice. hard to really recommend straight though

Nose

very faint nose. light vanilla.

Palate

mild spicey. slight mint.

Finish

short pleasant finish with slight mint and spice.

Smooth aroma and body but the finish was simple and spicy a touch sweet. A little less spice and a touch less on the sweet side and this could be a really good whiskey.
If you like ryes that are just a bit spicey and sweet then you'll live this.

I am not a rye fan. This is fairly complex for a rye. Lots of back heat and spice. I am not about to replace my top shelf items for a rye, but this is a good pour. For $37 in NC, there are things that I would rather drink than a rye for that price. It would need to be on sale. Much better than Bulleit Rye.
