About

The Islay-based Bruichladdich Distillery was opened in 1881, but their current product range is the result of the Jim McEwan-led revival of the early 2000's. Rémy Cointreau acquired Bruichladdich in 2012.

General description

General description

One of my favourite Octomores, Jim McEwan's swan song is amazing for a 5 year old Islay whisky. It has richness, the oak is balanced well with a high PPM peat, smoky meat, rubber, funky cheese and sweetness of fruit and vanilla. Along with Kavalan Solist, this is one that I enjoyed sharing with friends so much. Great to serve with a dark chocolate dessert.

Definitely needs a splash of water and some time to open up. Dark bitter chocolate and orange, and a peaty bog. Nose is surprisingly gentle, plenty of sea salt spray and leather and apple pie. Finish? - never ending and complex
