Smells like chocolate and oak.
It's my first rye whiskey, and i like it.

Good representation of a rye
Rittenhouse Bottled-in-Bond Straight Rye (Rittenhouse Rye) is a simple whiskey. There are not many aroma or flavors yet it is solid in what it is; but for me it is not something I'd seek for the bunker; I'm a sipper. I suspect this Whiskey would be fine as a mixer - in fact I am tempted to make an Old Fashioned and give it a try. I feel this could give any whiskey based mixed drink a solid backbone.

I drank this spirit neat, from a Glencairn glass.
The score below is similar to what I gave in my reviews of 1792 Full Proof and Old Grand-Dad 114.
Rittenhouse Rye noses with lots of dryness: dusty grain, drying hay, and a piney sweetness. While nosing, a lone apple slice would peek in but hide just as quickly. Cinnamon and allspice waft on each draw as does pepper, but the rye presents more as bread than a spice. The sweets are subdued as well ... maybe graham crackers mixed with light vanilla and simple syrup but there's just not much to note. There may be a few toasted pinenuts to go with musty pine sawdust, but again there's little to entertain the nose.
Like sensed on the nose, Rittenhouse Rye offers little for the palate. It is warm and does offer a little bite and there is an element of tobacco blended with dusty grain. Fresh spices of green pepper and ginger add depth to the rye. Again, there is little sweetness, maybe a trace of bittersweet chocolate. And the wood I get on the palate is similar to the nose: dry toasted pineyness.
Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Rittenhouse Rye is a simple whiskey, but what aromas and flavors can be detected are well balanced. In the mouth it is quite oily, yet grainy - almost gritty as if it needs chewing. As each sip is taken, long evenly spaced legs return the remaining liquid to the honey colored pool, leaving a nice inverted crown.
Rittenhouse Rye offers a medium finish with an essense of throat warming apricot compote. As sensed on the nose and in the mouth there is little to detect but traces of dusty grain and maybe a little peppered tobacco and dry toasted wood. In the empty Glencairn I sense an empty woodshop at the end of a busy workday.
Nothing special, but the price is right and you can find it. Pretty good mixer and better than lots of other ryes in it's price range.
for its price point it's a standard for my collection. light spice, mild oak.
Mild for a rye. Simple, herbal, woody flavor. Short Finish
Sweet, Baking Spice, Mint
Wood, Varnish, Sweet
Round, Smooth, Dry
Not a complex drink. Some spice on the palate. Mouth drying.
light but full of spice. heavy spice up front and moderate lingering spice
I'm going to level with you, this thing is straight cinnamon, albeit a good, dry cinnamon.
Yes, there are notes of black pepper, spicy fruit peel, and even a little char. But to call this anything other than a straight up cinnamon bomb would be underselling exactly how Cinnamon-y this thing really is.
It's too cinnamon forward for me personally, but I'll bet it would make a hell of a mixer, and it's a considerable upgrade from Fireball.
I did pour this into a glass of Coke Zero with ice, and as much as the cinnamon is tempered by the cola, it still is overpowering everything in its path. If you like cinnamon this is a very good budget rye that I would recommend, just understand that it is going to be the dominant factor in any mix you put it in.
Spicy, vanilla, a little cinnamon. This is a great rye. The price makes it that much better.
Sweet rye is n the nose, spicy vanilla on the palate, long spicy finish. A splash of water opened up vanilla on the nose, rye sweetness on the palate, and tamed the finish a little.
Light nose, some rye, caramel, and spice. Same character on the front palate transforming into a bouquet of spiced fruit and sweet, simple syrup. Medium to long finish with a lingering fruit flavor, some spice.
Nice low priced rye, caramel and pepper notes
Sweet caramel, peppery burn
Pepper liquorice
syrup sweet to the nose and taste. full flavour with some spice. body but not bold.
Very good
spicu
Mild on nose with hints of fruit, oak and vanilla. Initially Sweet on palate becoming spicy after a second or so. Medium finish with just enough complexity to keep things interesting. One of the best sipper for under $30
Simple and sweet rye. Not going to wow you but won't disappoint either
Dill, sweet, vanilla
Slight dill, rye spice, vanilla, pretty smooth, nutmeg, slightly sweet syrup
Wood tannin, leathery
Rather spicy taste
good rye. good value.
excellent rye, wonderful in an old fashioned
big dill notes to open. plenty of rye spice. licorice and mmmmm... a hint of cherry.... wonderful for a Sazerac. The finish is a bit brief... It is reminiscent of the 10 year Whistlepig rye in it's upfront dill notes but doesn't linger on the finish. at 25 a bottle you won't go wrong. price to payoff it rates a 10.
opens with a tremendous crispy dill, licorice and a touch of cherry, brown sugar and clove.
brown sugar and clove...
A little hot at 100proof, a couple drops of water opens it up. Happy with this in a Sazerac.
I'm not a huge fan of rye but this is pretty good
great rye
Slightly sweet nose with big rye notes. Oily and mouth-coating. Even with a teaspoon of water it has a little heat. Good with a little water or mixed drink. Definitely worth a try.
Makes a great Manhattan
Not bad. Spicy.
