General description
Bunnahabhain goes full peat...
Nose
Immediately, some amount of peat and the sea about this one. Salt, too, heading into Talikser territory early. A bit of spice will follow, no doubt. Honey here, with the barley, and at the moment, very much a peated Islay, and a real statement whisky by Bunnahabhain. Indeed, this is almost medicinal, like a Laphroaig in moments. When the glass does warm a bit, then yes, I get a little raisin and the sherry notes, but still, not significantly.
Palate
Tight honey flavours and sticking plaster to antiseptic ointments at the beginning. Surprisingly, the 46.3% doesn’t hammer home as yet, which shows a very good balance. Some good malt flavours here, with the spice beginning to show on subsequent sips. I get nothing of what certain reviews talk about, but then taste is extremely individual.
Finish
Oily and long, and very different to the Bunnahabhains I’ve tried before and recently. Definitely, this one goes it’s own way, which is not typical of what I’ve encountered of this distillery so far. The spice and pepperiness linger here and sparkle like light on water on the tongue. This is a power-packed dram and is like a micro-Octomore. The malt and oak stay on to the end too. Overall, a quality whisky and one that I would definitely try to get hold of again…
